Slow Food International
Slow Food is a non-profit organization that was founded in Italy in 1989 as a response to the standardizing effects of fast food and the disappearance of food traditions. It now involves over 83,000 members in 107 countries around the world.
Through a wide variety of initiatives, Slow Food works to counter the degrading effects of industrial and fast food culture that are standardizing taste, and promote instead the beneficial effects of nutritious, locally grown and indigenous foods.
Slow Food International has 850 groups,or convivia, all over the world and has saved 31 animal breeds, 81 fruit and vegetable varieties, 57 cheeses, and 34 cured meats at risk of extinction.
In today's fast-paced society, the food we prepare, eat and feed our families is all too often the first thing to fall victim to the demands of having too much to do, and too little time to do it in. But good, quality food isn't a luxury we can afford to do without. It is an essential ingredient to both a healthy, balanced life, and our capacity to enjoy the pleasures of our daily lives.
By promoting taste education programs for adults and children, the movement works to safeguard and promote public awareness of culinary traditions and customs.
Slow Food convivia support artisan food producers around the world who make quality products, and promote a philosophy of pleasure. In addition, Slow Food encourages tourism that respects and cares for the environment, and promotes charitable initiatives related to food and the environment across the globe.

Book Review
The End of Food by Thomas F. Pawlick
How the food industry is destroying our food supply-and what you can do about it.
Taste and nutrition are no longer on the list of qualities that tomatoes, and most other foods grown on large factory farms are bred for. Yield, size, shape, firmness, disease resistance, and their ability to travel long distances in a large truck are what is important. A shocking and bleak veiw of the todays food industry and how it is ruining our once good, and nourishing food. Ottawa is taking giant steps to take back control of what we are eating and this book will motivate you to make changes. Thomas, an eastern Ontario writer, will inspire you!
